I Can Do That

Serving the Church

When we talk about service at Arlington Heights UMC, we talk about two kinds of service: 1) serving the church and 2) joining the church in service to the world. Both are incredibly important. This interest form is your first step in serving the church.

The work of the church belongs to all the people of Arlington Heights UMC. Your presence and service shape the ministries of our church and create the environments through which people experience Christ.

Below you will see some ways you can serve our church. Some are existing ministries. Some are new. Tap or click the Info button next to any ministry to see a description. Choose one or more that interest you — a field will appear for you to share why. In the coming weeks, you will receive communication from a leader or pastor about next steps.

Info
Our Worship Design Team works with pastors and staff to make sure our worship spaces are visually engaging and liturgically appropriate across our different worship experiences. If you are visually or spatially creative or exceptionally organized, you could be a great fit for this team.
Info
Our Production Team makes sure people can see, hear, and experience worship fully whether in person or online. Team members provide audio, visual, and livestreaming support for all our services. If you like working behind the scenes, this could be the team for you. We have knowledgeable staff and leaders who can show you the ropes.
Info
Greeters provide the first impression for our church and set the tone for people's Sunday morning experience. They open doors, provide a warm welcome, and give directions for guests and members alike! If you want to make sure people know we are glad they are here, this is the job for you.
Info
Ushers welcome people as they enter our worship spaces, make sure they find seats, take up the offering, direct people for communion, and carry out other important tasks to make sure worship runs smoothly and guests feel welcome and informed. Additionally, those who are available assist with funerals and memorial services.
Info
Our communion stewards prepare the elements before worship and our communion servers help distribute them to worshipers during the service. If you want to play a tangible role in a sacred moment of our worship, this is a meaningful place to serve.
Info
Liturgists are lay people who lead portions of our worship services alongside the preaching pastor. These portions can include prayers, responsive readings, and scripture.
All positions in this area require Ministry Safe training, ministry-specific training, and a background check.
Info
Nursery volunteers work under the direction of our nursery coordinator to provide care for infants and toddlers during worship and other events. They make sure our families with young children have options to engage with worship and ministries of the church more fully. This is a great role for folks who enjoy taking care of children and are responsible.
Info
Our Children's Ministry has many opportunities for you to volunteer including serving as a Sunday School teacher, Children's Church leader, or volunteer for seasonal events such as VBS. In each role, you would help to create a safe environment for our children (birth - 5th grade) where they can learn about and experience a God who loves them.
Info
Our Student Ministry has many opportunities for you to volunteer including Sunday School teacher, small group leader, mission trip leader, and more. In each role, you would help to create a safe environment for our students (6th–12th grade) where they can learn about and experience a God who loves them.
Info
This team works with pastors and staff to make sure our homebound members as well as those going through times of loss, anxiety, or crisis feel supported by the church. We don't want anyone to feel alone. If you have had someone be there for you when you were going through a tough time, you know how important this ministry is. You can pay it forward and be there for someone else.
Info
Our hospitality team provides refreshments and support for receptions either before or after different events at the church. They primarily do this for funerals and memorial services, but also for some concerts or other significant events. If you have enjoyed a cookie or a cup of punch in our atrium, you can thank this group of folks.
Info
Our office volunteers work on weekdays during office hours at the direction of our office manager answering phone calls, welcoming guests, and completing administrative tasks.
Info
Our Archives team are stewards of our church's history — over 100 years! They also work with pastors, staff, and other leaders to archive stories of our continuing ministry for future generations. If you have a passion for history and organization, you could be a good fit for this team.
Info
Our church depends on leaders who serve on our Discipleship Council, Trustees Committee, Finance Committee, SPR Committee, and Lay Leadership Committee, and other ministry leading positions. If you would like to join others in helping shape and implement the vision of the church, let us know of your interest in serving in a leadership role.
